In October 2007, Genoma España publicly presented the report Relevance of Biotechnology in Spain 2007, which included a complete set of indicators of the importance of Spanish biotechnology. In this report, using an analysis of the data available for 2000-2006, a series of key issues were portrayed regarding the sate-of-the-art and the future perspectives of biotechnology in Spain. At the time, it clearly pointed out the important role that this new technology sector could have for the Spanish economy and the well-being of its citizens.
Now, after collecting and analyzing data for the period 2000-2008, Genoma España asserts that the perspectives for the evolution and relevance of biotechnology are still being confirmed and that, in addition, some of the most important recommendations made in 2007 are still valid today.
To correctly understand and analyze the impact of Spanish biotechnology, data presented in the report Relevance of Biotechnology in Spain 2009 are divided into five different areas ranging from the generation of knowledge in the fields of science to social perception, without disregarding the economic and business relevance of this new sector. These five areas include:
