On November 20, 2006 an international conference was held on "Agrobiotechnology and Bioenergy: A New Economy for Plant Crops." The event was co-organized by Genoma España and, the ITM Club and the Agricultural Forum, and was attended by Mercedes Cabrera, Minister for Education and Science during lunch and after the different speeches (see conference programme).
Over 200 people attended the conference, with national and international experts, which was divided into two sections. The first section, "New Plants," addressed issues related to novel foods, to biofactory installations and to plant biotechnology as a global business. In the second section, "Biofuels," focused on bioalcohols, biodiesel and the production of electricity and gas.
The conference showed the new economic and technology developments in the agricultural and energy fields owing to biotechnology, and also served to discuss new policies to support R&D&I, the research community and the business sectors.
The event featured a keynote speech by Peter Raven, a world authority in the field of biodiversity, who made a passionate defense of the possibilities of new transgenic plants as a key factor in global sustainability.
Every participant was given a copy of the publication "Plants as Biofactories," a technology watch report developed by Genoma España.
