Project addresses the “Generation of genomic tools in olive and application to the analysis of fruit and oil quality and agronomical traits”
The olive industry represents one of the most strategic sectors in the Spanish agro-food economy. The olive grove is the second culture in extension after that of cereals. Spain is the world's leading producer and exporter of olive oil and edible olives (sources: International Olive Oil Council and FAO), and the majority of this industry is located in the region of Andalusia. Additionally; Spain is the main worldwide provider of scientific and technology literature related to olive (source: Web of Knowledge; keyword: olea).
Thus, the "Olive genomics" project is a unique and unprecedented effort both in Spain and internationally in the field of olive functional genomics. It will place the Spanish scientific community at the forefront of this research field in the world.
