Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms in Chronic Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases

The main purpose of this research project is to determine the molecular basis of the initiation and resolution of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. The final aim will be the identification of novel inflammatory markers and signalling pathways with diagnostic and therapeutic value for asthma/allergic rhinitis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriasis.

Inflammation can be regarded as the only common syndrome in different pathologies. Consequently, its study promises benefits in many medical areas from diagnosis to therapy.

A large body of evidence shows that the inflammatory response is largely determined by genetic factors. This fact highlights the importance of identifying and understanding the genes that control the onset and resolution of the inflammatory process.

Such an undertaking requires a coordinated and multidisciplinary research project including both private and public entities that contribute with knowledge and expertise. This public-private approach will also facilitate bringing the research results to the market.

Specific Project Objectives

  1. Analyze the contribution of chemokines and metalloproteinases to leukocyte migration in cell and animal models of allergic and autoimmune inflammation.
  2. Study of the role of T lymphocyte activation signalling pathways in cell and animal models of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
  3. Study the regulation of macrophage and dendritic cell effector functions during inflammatory responses.
  4. Characterization of genes involved in vascular endothelium disorders associated with inflammatory responses.
