The BancoADN is a service platform with the initial aim of taking reference DNA samples from the Spanish population – between 1,000 and 1,300 samples – and preserving them to supply to researchers.
Following this initial aim, the BancoADN will be extended to gradually add DNA samples of patients with diseases of clinical relevance to the country.
Beyond the complex nationwide sample collection task, the BancoADN has incorporated the most advanced international ethical rules into its operation.
The BancoADN's task is key for the progress of genome research and, consequently, for research on how to preserve people's health. The BancoADN is coordinated by Dr Alberto Orfao and is based in Salamanca University.
€2.0 million in 5 years (2004-2008) by Genoma España.
€300,000 in 2 years (2005-2006) by Castile Leon Regional Government.
The BancoADN will make the Spanish population reference samples available to the research community in the fall 2005.
