Funding protection of research results in biotechnology (patents)

 

In order to improve the transfer of biotechnology in Spain from public laboratories to businesses and industry, Genoma España provides financial assistance to universities, R & D centers, public hospitals and new tecnology-based firms (NTBF’s) less than three years old  wishing to contract for professional services to protect their research results The final objective of this call, together with promoting technology transfer, is to make possible that Spanish society could directly benefit  from the major advances made by Spanish laboratories and their scientific excellence.


Universities, public-sector research institutions, hospitals and NTBF’s can turn to registered industrial property agents when they need to assess the patentability of a research result, as well as to write patent claims for a patent application filed at the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). Genoma España will fund up to 75% of the associated cost.

 

 

Funding patent development and business plans by spin-offs

 

Genoma España assesses the technological and commercial viability of patents from Universities, public-sector research institutions and hospitals in order to bring them to market. Those patents which receive a favourable evaluation will be considered eligible for funding aimed at conducting technology development projects of a demonstrative character. This development will reduce uncertainty about the commercial viability of all the products included in the patent application. In addition, Genoma España facilitates the transfer of patents and / or products developed within the framework of the project which has been granted support.

 

In the same way, Genoma España assesses the technological and commercial opportunities of all the spin-offs set up by a researcher or group of researchers who have obtained research results with commercial potential or applied for a patent. These companies must submit their business plan to Genoma España.

 

Those which get a positive evaluation and accept the conditions set by Genoma España will benefit from funding for development in exchange for holding a stake in it.

 

In addition, Genoma España will help market the company by transferring its stake to any third party interested in purchasing in order to develop the company further and / or bring its products to market.
